So sorry to hear about the loss of this great man. Evert was one of the most influential teachers in my life and I am eternally grateful for his thoughtfulness, his kindness and his true genius. I will miss him but I will carry him in my heart, always. May he rest in peace.
With love,

I was also a student of Evert's at Vassar in the 1980s, and fondly remember his sharp mind and wit. He directed me as the title character in Euripides' "Hippolytus" and we stayed in touch over the years. The photo is from a visit in 2013. We shall not see his like again; condolences to his family, friends and ex-students.

Evert (how long it took and how hard it was to address him that way!) has always been an inspiration, from those first challenging seminars, to reading his new Ibsen biography, and to his forthcoming book he recently emailed about. Most of my teaching career, I used his approach to Ibsen and Strindberg (sometimes still emailing him after class with student questions I couldn't answer!). Only in later decades did I take different approaches, and when I mentioned my sources to him, let's just say I knew I had touched a nerve. It was an honor to teach under his shadow, and a privilege to find my own path. He could be formidable, but there was always that twinkle in his eye, the raised eyebrow, and the wry smile. He always seemed on the verge of giggling. How many of us have our favorite Sprinchorn story, and how many were inspired to dig a little deeper. My oh my, how I will miss him.

My deepest condolences to the family of Professor Evert Sprinchorn. What a treasure! I studied Scandinavian dramatic literature under his tutelage, Plawrights August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen. He opened new worlds for me. We students were fortunate to be able to go to a Broadway show my freshman year on a Vassar-chartered bus for the occasion, to see Ibsen's "A Doll's House" starring Claire Bloom, whom I met in-person later in life when she visited Rockford, Illinois outside of Chicago, where I now live. She was being honored at Rockford College for her illustrious career. As a senior at Vassar, I appeared in a one-act play for opening night and the christening of the new Vassar Hallie Flanagan Powerhouse Theater in October 1973, "She Canna Perish," along with classmate Louise Smith Pencavel, while Professor Sprinchorn was Department Chair. We are members of Vassar's historic first coeducational freshman class, the Class of 1974. At Christmas senior year, I played an ingenue opposite classmate Sterling Swann in Eugene O'Neill's only comedy, "Ah, Wilderness!" with classmate Marilyn Roberts playing my mother. Professor Sprinchorn was Department Chair all four of my years at Vassar. Professor Sprinchorn will be sorely missed by the Vassar community. May his memories be a blessing to you. Professor Sprinchorn was a brilliant scholar and a challenging, engaging teacher whose classes were among my very favorites at Vassar. We corresponded regularly via email over the years, and I have an extremely fond memory of being invited to his house for tea in 2014 (when I was on campus as part of a career mentoring weekend), whereupon we had a lively conversation about the theatre in general and my experiences as a working theatre actor in particular. He was a great influence on me, and he will be sincerely missed.

Professor Sprinchorn was an inspiring and avant-garde professor who contributed mightily to my love of drama and my professional career in the theater. We became friends and colleagues when I joined Vassar’s drama department and stayed in touch through the years both in Poughkeepsie and in New York City. He will be remembered and dearly missed.
