Obituary of George M. Bernhardt
George M. Bernhardt, 89, of Shadyside Rd., Lakewood, passed away Sunday. April 23, 2023 in his home.
He was born Dec. 31, 1933 in Jamestown, the son of the late Elmer and Airetta Gesaman Bernhardt. George started school at Fletcher school, then moved on to a one room school in Kiantone, Frewsburg Central School, and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1952.
An Air Force veteran, George's service from 1953 to 1957 included basic training at Geneva, NY, and technical training at Biloxi, MS, McGuire AFB in New Jersey, and finally Orlando AFB in Florida, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He worked in flight line operations coordinating pilot flight planning with the FAA. Following his Air Force service, he attended Jamestown Community College, graduating in 1960.
For 41 years, from 1952 to 1993, George was employed by MRC-TRW/SKF in a variety of positions, from the Jamestown plant turning department, moving to management in accounting, and on to computer processing. From 1995 to 1998, he returned for 4 years to SKF in Falconer for special projects.
George spent 20 years with the MRC Federal Credit Union as a Board director and on the Credit Committee. He volunteered with Catholic Charities and the United Way, was a member of the Celoron American Legion Post #777 and Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and was a former member of the Vikings.
George married Margaret "Dolly" Cordosi in 1954, and is survived by three sons: David (Carole) Bernhardt of Pittsburgh, PA, and Christopher (Rene) Bernhardt and Randall (Amy) Bernhardt, both of Lakewood, NY; four grandchildren: Carlie (Marion) Soldano, Dustin (Brianna) Bernhardt, Paige (Michael Szalkowski) Bernhardt, and Ryan (Alison) Heider; and a brother, Marvin Bernhardt of London, OH.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by Margaret Bernhardt and his sister, Clarene Hans.
The family will greet friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20th in Holy Apostles Parish, Ss. Peter & Paul Church prior to a Memorial Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Rev. Don Walter will be celebrant. Inurnment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
