Obituary of William C. Colter
William "Bill" C. Colter, 79, of Jamestown, passed away peacefully at UPMC Chautauqua on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Bill was born December 6, 1943, in Breckenridge, MI, the son of the late John and Leah Schaffer Colter.
After graduating high school in 1961, he joined the United States Air Force, where he was trained as an Electronic and Cryptographic Systems Equipment Repairman, serving until his honorable discharge in 1965.
He then attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1969, and followed that with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in Transportation Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1970. His professional career began at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, where he worked from 1970 through 1972.
Bill continued his studies at the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1973. His career in engineering continued at Sprinchorn & Company, where he worked as a mechanical engineer and vice president from 1973 to 2001. He was granted two US patents for his innovative work on HVAC systems. Following this, he founded Dynamic Ventilation, LLC, in 2001.
Outside of his professional life, Bill was a longtime faithful communicant of Holy Apostles Parish at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, where he served as a lector. He enjoyed tennis, coaching his children's soccer teams, and gardening, favoring a wild beauty in his yard.
He is survived by his wife, Carole Sprinchorn Colter, whom he married in 1966, his two children, John Colter of Washington, D.C., and Kathryn Freeman (née Colter), married to Tyler Freeman, of Jamestown, and his two grandchildren, Meredith, and Genevieve Freeman.
A memorial mass will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations can be made to the Audubon Community Nature Center at 1600 Riverside Road, Jamestown NY, or the charity of your choice in Bill's memory.
