Dear Kim and Family -- I was deeply saddened to learn about Steve's passing -- at the end, of course, of what beyond question
was a life well lived.
As you well know, I treasured the comradery we shared, as you two teammates helped me memorialize so many 18th, 19th and 20th century family members in the Warren and Chautauqua county region.
One of the most moving of your memorials was the one you created for my four great grandparents, Revolutionary veteran Thomas Curtis and his wife Thankful Crandall in Stockton's Greenwood Cemetery. (Almost every morning I gratefully Iook at the photo you sent me of the Curtis marker.)
Other standouts include the Peter, Roby and Freelove Loucks marker in Fluvanna and the Blodgett marker in Allen Cemetery. I so well remember Steve's enthusiastic response to my suggestion that we utilize one of my most favorite Jensen-Haglund markers for Thaddeus and Sally Blodgett and their offspring. When I proposed this plan, Steve remarked that he knew full well how much I'd always admired that particular marker. Predictably, he proceeded to create the perfect inscription for that six-person handsome granite canvas.
On my many trips through the decades between Shippensburg and Jamestown, I made a point of stopping by J-H for a chat. Now, sadly, due to the ravages of time, I am unable to make those pilgrimages. And more sadly, Steve is no longer with us in the flesh.
I also fondly remember Steve's quick embrace of my rather embarrased proposal to shift 2 of my 3 (!!!) memorials for myself, by exchanging markers between Foster and Fluvanna.
I have carefully instructed my nephew Russell Estus to consult with your monument works as he carries out my instructions to add my death date to my Busti, Fluvanna and Foster markers.
Steve was such an unforgettable friend and I consider myself blessed that you two have been an important part of my history-enriched life..
Fondly and appreciatively,
Rupert Charles Loucks

Rip Good friend. Although we didn’t see much of each other in our later years, I will never forget all of the days of great friendship. All of the times I would pickup you and Wilber religiously head over to the quiki mart for beer then up to the reservoir to pitch horse shoes with our also deceased “tuna” Rod Olson. Then head to the College Inn. I will never forget the times uptown when the owners of the Cozy Corner would say “the swede hill boys are rowdy tonight “. Those were the days! To Kim and your family they have my deepest condolences. Rest in peace dear friend.

Steve was one of a kind …. A father to all the kids that grew up in the square , the kind of man that you hope all young men grow up to be like . Steve was kind, hard working, talented , hilarious, and had an infectious laugh, all traits that he passed on to all four of his children. As if his genuine personality wasn’t enough how did Ellington get so lucky to have their very own handsome Kevin Costner?? So many years of memories made with Steve and his family, the memory that will forever reserve space in my mind is the night Sarah and I stayed up later than we were supposed to watching Shirley Temple, Steve came downstairs and instead of telling us it was time to turn it off he said “ you girls can’t stay up this late without having toast with cinnamon and sugar “ and popped bread in the toaster as he grabbed his coffee and stayed up with us sitting in the corner chair of the living room . It’s hard to wrap my head around being in Ellington without seeing Steve’s smile across the street , for the man that brought peace to so many others grieving their lost loved ones rest peacefully knowing that your memory will never fade, tho physically you may not be with us anymore , your soul remains in everything beautiful that surrounds us , from the peacefulness of walking through the woods, to the beauty we see in every stone you touched. I love you Lundstens.

There are so many memories of my dear friend Steve growing up on the the hill. Horse shoes at the reservoir, fishing for trout on opening day, hunting for trophy bucks , lodging horns, harmonies of Elvis Presley, playing softball (he was one of the best pitchers in Chautauqua County). I was also envious of his artistic talent, his smile and the way he would curl his upper lip up like Elvis.
“Come on Eddy give us the Elvis lip” and we would all crack up. We all knew he had found his soul mate with Kim. We love you Kim ,Jim, Patty, sons and daughter, grandchildren. I have never forgotten Steve nor will I. Gods peace be with you all.

I met Steve in 2000 when I was shopping for my first husband’s cemetery marker. He was so kind and willing to create whatever I wanted, including going to a cemetery to look at a marker I told him I liked. I was so surprised when I walked in his shop 20 years later and he remembered who I was, before I let on I had met him before.
