Obituary of Mary Ellen Bonner

Mary Ellen Bonner, 78, of Jamestown, known as "Mern" to her friends, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2023. She was born June 5, 1945, in Albany, NY. She grew up in Menands, NY, attended Vincentian Institute in Albany, and graduated with honors from the University of Buffalo in 1967 with a degree in psychology. Mary Ellen was an active and engaged part of our community and a parishioner of Sts. Peter and Paul Church. In 1988, she was elected to the Jamestown City Council, where she was respected by city officials and constituents for her intellect, work ethic, and sense of humor. For 20 years, she served on the Board of Directors of Jamestown Community College, leading and overseeing the campus expansion of new dorms and facilities. Mern was an animal advocate, an active ASPCA Member, and a Board Member of the Chautauqua County Humane Society. She also served on the board of the Jamestown YMCA. In her day, Mern loved to golf at Moonbrook, ski at Holiday Valley, travel, and walk her beloved Irish Setters around the northside neighborhood. Mary Ellen is survived by William, her loving husband of 56 years, sons Michael (Hillary) of Taos, New Mexico, Tim (Amanda) of Jamestown, and many close friends and family. She will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
