She was a graduate of Sherman Central School class of 1953. She attended Fredonia State Technical College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Music in 1957. During that time in Lakewood, she married the late Ted Anderson in the Sherman Community Church on April 19, 1964. She sang at her wedding. Janis pursued a teaching position in music at Alfred-Almond Central School in Almond, NY for four years. She returned to Chautauqua County and taught at Southwestern Central the Lakewood Elementary School, where she taught both vocal and instrumental music in grades K-6. In 1966 Ted and Janis moved to Hornell, NY. Janis taught music in Hornell Public Schools while Ted attended Binghamton University. They retired to Chautauqua County and Ted taught at Falconer. During this time their daughter Stephanie was born. They bought a house in Sherman where Janis taught Music at Sherman Central School in the elementary grades and Ted continued to teach at Falconer. Janis also played the organ at Camp Street United Methodist Church. Both Ted and Janis taught at their respective jobs until 1999, when they both retired and bought a small ranch and raised Morgan in Wyoming. Ted and Janis moved to Powell, WY where they purchased a home and lived there until Ted's death from diabetes in 2009. During that time, they became interested in Arabians. Stephanie and Janis returned to Chautauqua County and with them, they brought eight Arabians. In 2010 Janis bought the Joe Edwards Farm in Panama and restored a machine barn where they had stalls built for all the horses. During this time in Panama, Stephanie passed away and Janis moved to Ashville to live with her brother-in-law Gary Anderson. Janis has made many friends from Wyoming to New York.
