Dear Jan and family,
I just saw this today as I don't check the paper often. I am so sorry for your loss. My memories of Joe was that of a man with a smile on his face.
The friendship that he had with my husband Dave's brother Ray also comes to mind.
I know that Joe will be greatly missed.

I often talked with Joe at the Lakewood YMCA. We would go out to lunch together many times. Of all things, we would talk about backyard birds. He was a great guy and I will miss him.

So sad to hear this. Joe was an incredible human being. Always so positive and nice. Years would pass and when he saw me he would be quick to remember some childhood story with the Bloomquist’s or Lyons. His presence will be missed. RIP Joe. Cheers to your beautiful life.

I worked for Joe summer of '93 at Chautauqua. He was so genuine, fair, and honest. I will miss his smile, honest no-bullshit perspective and love for the whole Chautauqua area. I am better for having known him - as I expect many others were as well.

When the boys were little, I lived next door on Chestnut Street. My favorite babysitting job. Joe was a funny and smart guy. He always updated me on Mark and Todd’s lives whenever we saw each other.
My sincere condolences to you all. Fondly,

Although we met infrequently with Joe and Jan, those encounters were rollicking good fun. I will miss Joe’s trademark unoffensive use of profanity in our conversations. Even though Joe and I were on opposite ends of the political spectrum, it did not prevent us from having interesting, provocative and collegial conversations.

To Jan and family: As Joe’s former neighbor, I always enjoyed stopping for a chat when he was out in the yard or in his workshop. He always had a smile and an interesting experience to relate. I am sorry to hear of his passing. May many happy memories of Joe sustain you in the days to come.

Joe was City Finance Director when I was BPU Business Manager. Since Joe was a former BPU Business Manager, I would sometimes ask him for advice. Joe was always happy to take whatever time was necessary to provide that advice, and I really appreciated his willingness to do so. My most sincere condolences to Joe’s Family – he was a great guy.

Joe inspired, encouraged and supported me to pursue a life of public service and community volunteerism. He did so not only through the “poetry” of his words ( and what a beautiful mastery of language he possessed), but more importantly , through the eloquence of of his passionate, hardworking and caring example. Truly, our community is a better place today because Joe returned home and selflessly shared his time and brilliant talents on so many fronts.
During this difficult time, my condolences go out to Jan and his entire family. My thoughts also turn, with a smile in my heart, to the stories, jokes and guidance that Joe provided through the years.
Rest in peace my friend. And, thank you.

Hard to mourn, rather than celebrate, a tough old bird who hung in to see the Wolverines win the fourth Rose Bowl in his lifetime, caught the trophy trout of his life at age 80… on a fly rod, and regularly practiced his naughty-nautical vocabulary to the delight of his audiences. As much as we shall miss him, are hearts are with you who will miss him all the more.

The news of Joe's passing caught me by surprise and saddened me beyond measure. With his wisdom, love of reading and unending support of libraries he was a gift to the library world (and the world in general!) His counsel meant so much. One of his most endearing qualities was his ability to "tell it like it is" and for that I will be forever grateful. What a wonderful man. You will be so missed Joe. My deepest condolences go out to your family...

This obit makes me so very sad! Joe was one of my "running buddies" when I had the joy of being the choral director for Chautauqua Institution! Joe and I ran with Dick Reddington almost every morning that I had that joy back in the 80's!! Joe's colorful personality always had us laughing as we would run past our organist's apartment and yell for her to get out of bed! To Joe's family, please accept my condolences and prayers that in death, Joe most likely has those around him smiling with joy!
