She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on February 19, 1962, the daughter of the late George and Doris (Potter) Knab. Kim grew up in Varysburg, N.Y., the youngest of four children. She graduated from Attica High School in 1980 and subsequently received a degree from Bryant and Stratton College in Buffalo, N.Y.
