Tim was a great friend we made in Florida. He will never be forgotten.

Jan- You and Tim were the most generous hosts I’ve ever known. You shared your home and genuine love with joy. Tim’s humor and kindness are legendary. Just the other day I heard a song from the Roy Orbison Black and White Concert and I was transported back to your living room, enjoying Tim’s enthusiasm for the music we loved. You both helped me get through a very difficult time in my life and I’ll be forever thankful for your loving friendship.
May Tim’s memory be a blessing.

I will always remember Tim for all the wonderful advice and friendship that he gave not only to me but all others that he touched in life. There are great memories that others have shared and I can remember many of his stories that he told. From him introducing gliders to Brokenstraw Airport, helping me get my glider private pilot, commercial and flight instructors certificates, owning a bunch of gliders in partnership with him and working our tails off to make the soaring community better, he was a true friend indeed.
I could go on and on, but I am glad Tim was prepared for his next journey.
He is riding the thermals way up high now.

After my initial glider instruction, Tim and I became great friends. He coined the phrase "a couchful of cushions" based on my being able to reach the rudder pedals.
I was lucky enough to go kayaking and bicycling with Tim (and Jan) several times. Then he and Jan spent parts of the past few winters with us in FL. One year they brought board games. Tim decided to pit boys against girls. I'll let Jan tell you how that ended.
Tim and I also split beef from Angus cows that he picked out for us. He got me into canning again, which I hadn't done in years.
One story he told methat sticks in my mind, and I always repeat is how he had to bail out of his glider once at Dart Airport, because the controls locked up. He was at a low altitude and the glider chased him down, but he went through a tree and the glider landed itself.
We have countless other stories from both Dart and Brokenstraw and he will forever be the lifeblood of the glider community around here.
Thanks to Tim for teaching me so many things. He and Jan made the perfect duo, both Teachers!
He really was very knowledgeable. He also helped me with my handgun. He will be greatly missed by Bill and I. I have him to thank for my current cherished friendship with Jan. Rest in Peace Buddy!

Jan chose a good man.
We have been so blessed to have Tim in our family, fun times, great conversations, and sharing the love of our Savior.
I can’t even remember the time of getting to know Tim, he was so welcoming as we had known each other forever, and will continue the love for each other for eternity.
We will all miss Tim in our own special ways.
See you in our heavenly home
We love you Jan and Tim

Tim’s light is still strong in all of us whose lives he touched. The pure love, respect and joy the two of you shared was palpable and spread its energy to others. I feel blessed to have known Tim and to have enjoyed his hosting skills, to be regaled with his endless stories and mirth and to have felt the energy of love and faith you both brought to your home and others. He’s an extraordinary soul who made the most of this lifetime.

Spending most of my summer weekends at Brokenstraw between ages 13 and 20, I can’t express how significant of an impact Tim had on my life. As a young student pilot, like many others before and after me, the Marine in Tim intimidated me at first. But as I spent more and more time around him, I started to truly appreciate the sheer volume of knowledge he was sharing, and before long that I was looking up to Tim as not only an excellent flight instructor, but a world glass glider pilot and eventually a close personal friend.
My flight training with Tim began primarily after I soloed, where my training shifted focus from flying safely, to truly learning to soar. I couldn’t have asked for a more qualified instructor in this department, and while as a young teenager I routinely claimed to “have a knack” for soaring, and I relished the few times I found my self out climbing my other instructors, I was never quite able to keep up with Tim. I have vivid memories, as I know most all of the brokenstraw soaring club members do, of working my butt off in a thermal climbing 100ft a minute and looking up at Tim way above me near cloud base, or hearing him call over the radio asking “what’s taking so long, the lift is good over here”.
I’ll never forget all those talks in the hangar, those training flights where you could still feel his presence on the controls nudging you in the right direction, my first cross country flights with Tim shephearding me beyond the home airport, or Tim’s unique ability to act as a conductor to the rest of us pilots as we carefully positioned all the gliders back into the hangar like a perfectly choreographed dance.
When my grandfather bought my first glider with Tim’s help, it was Tim who gave me all the information I needed to make the jump to flying a high performance glider. All that winter I can remember trips to Tim’s house to work on the glider, repairing the panel and interior, waxing wings, etc. When it finally came time to fly it for the first time, I was admittedly pretty scared, but as he connected the tow rope, Tim kneeled down beside the nose and gave me the last couple bits of advice he had and a reassuring “and don’t crash” in only the way Tim could say it. In that moment I knew that if Tim thought I could fly that glider safely, I was going to be alright.
There were countless other moments like this, where on the precipice of doing something a little outside my comfort zone in a glider, Tim gave me the training and that last little push to go for it. I couldn’t thank him enough for all the time, training, and support he gave me over the years. I know I wouldn’t be the pilot or the man I am today without his influence.
Rest In Peace, and a 10kt thermal Tim.

Growing up with Tim all of us guys were very aware of Tim and his adventures. When Tim and I were on our snowmobiles once I turned to look for him just as he cut across when i was turning and we hit the sky on my snowmobile snapped right off. We did not always know where we were in the world when I was on an aircraft carrier in the Tonkin gulf Tim was on embassy duty in Australia.
I was a miracle that Tim survived getting pushed through the tractor shed wall and almost bled out. God had other plans for him.
Over the years we kept in touch but not as often as I would have liked. His wedding to Jan was a very special event and I am glad I was there. I will continue to keep Jan in my prayers and will miss him greatly.

Tim was always very generous with his time! He spent hours helping each of us with safe flying, our gliders and our equipment. He encouraged us to expand our flying abilities. I doubt we would have been able to have a successful club at Brokenstraw without Tim. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Jan, Tim was a special person. Even though our visits back East were few, they are all cherished memories. He was so loving, hospitable, and fun to talk with. I fondly remember this day, such a simple act of driving a tractor around your property brought so much joy to my sons and Tim. May the love of Jesus surround you and bring peace during your time of grieving. We love you, Jan!

Jan, Chris & I are grateful you & Tim were part of our lives & our church’s ministry. Seeing him serve in our kids ministry was a joy to witness. He was a great “grandpa” to them. We so enjoyed those times when you & Tim hosted small group gatherings in your home. You both were so hospitable and we loved getting to know folks and growing in our faith together. Tim was always eager to learn more & I so enjoyed my discussions with him. But my great memory will be the joy I received in baptizing him. This picture will always be one of my favorite memories of Tim. It reflects absolute elation and the Mara smile we loved so much.
