Obituary of George David Sherman III

George David (Dave) Sherman III, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on Thursday March 21, 2024, at the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Dave lived to be 94 years old having been born, in Jamestown, NY, the son of the late George David Sherman II and Winifred Allen Sherman LeBaron of Celeron, NY, on July 30, 1929. He was a loving husband happily married to Mary Lou Haglund Sherman with whom he shared 70 years filled with love, understanding, and unwavering devotion. They lived for over 50 years, at 20 Lowell Place in the Village of Fredonia. Dave is a veteran of the U. S. Navy Reserve having served as a Personnel man aboard the USS Willard Keith (DD-775). He spent the early part of his business career working for the then F.W. Woolworth Company. He and his family moved to Fredonia in the summer of 1969 where Dave became an Insurance Agent with Mutual of Omaha. He had a very successful career, having retired in 2006. He and Mary Lou have three children Diane Swank (Michael Dimmer) of Fredonia, Randy Sherman (Cheryl) of Fredonia and Jeff Sherman (Lisa) of Charlotte, NC. Six grandchildren Matt Swank (Karen) of Westfield, Brooke Cerrie (Michael) and Jackie Gibbons (Terry) of Fredonia, Reid Sherman (Sherri) of Albemarle, NC, Ian Sherman of Manhattan, NY, and Emily Sherman of Charlotte, NC, and eleven great-grandchildren. As a father, Dave was a source of guidance, wisdom, and endless love. He instilled in his children values of honesty, resilience, and compassion. He was always there to celebrate their achievement and provide comfort during challenges. If you knew Dave, you knew him as a friend. He was always willing to do anything to help, lend a hand, or just to listen. He was a member of the Fredonia Presbyterian church early in life and then became a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church serving on various local and civic boards. Dave was a long-term volunteer worker for the local Trooper Toys for Tots. He was an avid sports fan, never missed listening to the NY Yankees on the radio and always enjoyed watching NASCAR racing. In keeping with Dave's wishes funeral services will be private. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Red Cross, 50 Hough Hill Rd, Falconer, NY 14733, in his honor as Dave was a lifelong blood donor. Dave, you will be deeply missed, but your memory will forever remain etched in our hearts. Rest in peace, knowing that you made the world a better place simply by being in it.
