Obituary of Sally A. Stauffer

Sally (Younkin) Stauffer passed away (day-month-year) at the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center in Gerry, NY. Sally was born in Greensburg, PA, on December 29, 1941. Her parents were Frank and Lillian Younkin, also from the Greensburg area. Sally spent her younger years in West Newton, PA where she completed her elementary and high school years. After graduation, Sally enrolled at Thiel College in Greenville, PA and graduated in 1963 with a degree in secondary English education. She went on to the University of Pittsburgh, SUNY Fredonia and Canisius College for a Masters Degree in English Literature. She was also awarded a Wall Street Journal Fellowship in 1969 to study Journalism at Loyola University. After a few years of teaching in the Pittsburgh area, Sally retreated north to Jamestown, NY and to the Southwestern Central Schools. Her association with Southwestern spanned 32 years as a high school English teacher, newspaper advisor and chairperson of the English Department. Also active in the Teachers' Association, Sally served in various offices, including President. Retirement years kept Sally busy. She was a columnist for two years with the Post-Journal and was author of the column "People and Places". She wrote a newspaper for the Southern Chautauqua County Retired Teachers Association and later became president of that group. Sally maintained an affiliation with the Fortnightly Literary Club and was a regular member of the Mystery Book Club. A long-time member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and of the Marvin House, Sally also proudly supported the Fenton History Center and at one point served on their Board of Trustees. As a long-time supporter of the Falconer Library, Sally deemed Sue Seamans a strong influence on the flourishing of that library. Surviving are several nieces and nephews including James Hann of White Oak, PA, who was her guardian. Sally was preceded in death by both of her parents and by her brother David Frank Younkin. Also preceding her in death were her three sisters Janie Hann, Alma Jean Hart, and Barbara White. No funeral service or visitation will be observed. Inurnment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
