Obituary of Thomas E. Peters, Sr.

Thomas E. “Tom” Peters, Sr., 79, of Gerry, NY passed away Sunday, April 21, 2024 surrounded by his family following a valiant battle with cancer. Born December 16, 1944 in Warren, PA to the late Earl and Dorothy Saxton Peters, Thomas was respectively then raised by his father, Earl, and his beloved acting mother, Ethel, following his mother’s early death in Tom’s childhood. A Jamestown High School graduate, Tom was drafted into the US Army where he served throughout the Vietnam War. Following his service, Tom married his wife, Amy, in 1967, while providing for his family for 40 years thereafter as a career Carborundum employee. Tom and Amy Peters shared their love for the New York Mets; likewise, Tom was an avid bowler and a periodic golfer. In early years as his sons Tommy and Mike grew up playing youth baseball in Gerry, Tom was not only their proud father, but their coach. His lifelong dedication to the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department is a commendable illustration of his innate need to serve others. Surviving are two sons, Thomas Jr. (Joanna) Peters of Hamburg, NY, and Michael (Stephanie) Peters of Jamestown, NY. Tom leaves behind five loving grandchildren: Carson and Lauren Peters; and Aidan, Anthony, and Brianna Peters. In addition to his wife, Amy, who passed October 2, 2016, Tom was preceded in death by his parents as well as many siblings. The family will receive friends from 4-7pm Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11am Thursday at Lind’s with burial to follow in Lake View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gerry Volunteer Fire Department, 4490 Gerry Levant Rd, Gerry, NY 14740.
