Vonnie & I grew up together as next-door neighbors. Our birthdays were one week apart. She taught me to ride a bike on her own nearly new bike, but never got mad at me for all of the scratches I put on it while learning. I was nerdy with glasses and long little girl curls not yet interested in boys when 'most everyone but me was invited to a boy-girl party--Vonnie refused to go since I wasn't invited, and she and I went to the movies. We used to ride our bikes (I FINALLY learned!!) from Jamestown to Poland Center to spend a week at Gramma & Grampa Macey's on the farm. Those were the good old days!! In the last few months, as I watched her slip away, memories sustained me and I know that now she is with God and probably flashing that impish smile!
I visited her on the day before she died, and I'm sure that she knew I was there -- how comforting!
