Obituary of Nancy M. Elofson

Nancy M. Elofson, 87, of 81 Gordon Street, Jamestown passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010 in Heritage Green Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing facility. She was born January 27, 1923 in Glencoe, IL, the daughter of Bernard F. and Agnes U. Meyer. She received a BA degree from Western College for Women in Oxford Ohio, and worked as a sales correspondent for Scott, Foresman Publishing in Chicago. She married Carl L (Jim) Elofson and moved to Jamestown in 1946. She and her husband owned Office Machines & Equipment Co. where she served as Secretary until their retirement in 1986. She was a member of First Congregational Church UCC from 1946 until her death, serving on numerous committees, singing in the choir and serving as Treasurer and Moderator. She was very involved in various capacities and held offices with many local organizations over the years including the Fortnightly, Great Decisions Discussion group, Little Theatre of Jamestown, Jamestown Choral Society, The Mozart Club, YWCA of Jamestown, AAUW, The Inter-Club Council, The Chautauqua Area Girls Scouts, Allied Arts and the United Way. She was a founding member and past-president of the board of directors for Chautauqua Adult Day Care Centers, Inc. and was named Caregiver of the Year by the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging in 1988. She was named to Marquis Who's Who of American Women in 1994, and received the Inter-Club Council's Woman of the Year award for 1996. She received a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow award in 2003. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, music and working with elder care services. She is survived by one son, Peter (Peggy) Elofson, and a granddaughter, Marsha Elofson, all of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl (Jim) Elofson, who died December 7, 1991. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church in Jamestown on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 1:00 pm. The family will be present for a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to one of the following: Chautauqua Adult Day Care Centers, Inc., First Congregational Church, YWCA of Jamestown, United Way of Southern Chautauqua County Forever Fund or Hospice Chautauqua County.
