Obituary of J. Nevil Horner
J. Nevil Horner, 93, of 79 Pennsylvania Ave. passed away at his home on Friday, December 24, 2010 following a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Martha Mitzo Horner, whom he married July 24, 1943 and who died September 27, 2010.
An area resident most of his life, Nevil was born January 5, 1917 in Barrow-in-Furness, England, a son of the late George and Elizabeth Horner.
Mr. Horner was a World War II veteran, serving in the United Sates Army Signal Corps attached to the 15th Air Force. He served 29 months in Goya, Italy maintaining radio and radar systems in B29 Bombers.
He was employed for over 46 years by Alltel, formerly Mid-Continent and Jamestown Telephone Company, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Assoc., First Congregational Church, the American Legion and the VFW.
Nevil was a skilled craftsman and enjoyed walking, roller skating, swimming, camping, boating on Chautauqua Lake and old movies. He was a kind and devoted husband, serving many years as primary caregiver for his late wife, as well as father to his four children.
Nevil is survived by four children and their families. First a son, Terrance Nevil (Kathleen) Horner of Jamestown, three grandchildren Terrance Nevil Horner Jr. of Washington, DC; David (Kristie) Horner and great grandchildren Olivia and Luke David, all of Hookstown, PA; and Michelle (John) Macris and great grandchildren Zoe, Peter John and Sophia, all of Superior, CO.
He is further survived by a daughter, Kathleen Lynn Horner of Owego, NY.
Thirdly surviving is a son, Robert David Horner and granddaughters Ashley Brooke and Kimberly Lynn, all of Orlando, FL.
Lastly surviving is a daughter, Judith Ann (Steven B.) Carlson and grandchildren Alexander Tage (Ashley) Carlson and Sara Brooke Carlson, all of Loudonville, NY.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Dorrence Horner.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald E. Ray will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
