I know exactly where I got my love of theater. It was the day that my grandmother and I snuck into Norton Hall at the Chautauqua Institute to see Cinderella. From that moment on, I was hooked.
She took my brother and me to see many operas, musicals, and symphonies at Chautauqua. I remember every performance. She would still laugh about meeting the lead in The Merry Widow backstage before the performance and realizing at intermission that she had 2 different shoes on. I giggle just thinking about it. She had an amazing smile and laugh.
Dena was an incredible woman that wanted to help everyone and wanted to see them succeed. She was willing to put herself out there for you. She is the reason I am a banker and I will forever be grateful to her for that.
She taught me to play canasta to the point where the only way she could win would be to put "a hex" on the pile.
I love you, Grandma.

I have not seen Dena for many years, but I remember her well. We taught together at Frankliln School in Kent, Ohio and shared many fun times, many of them centered around music. We did Team-Teaching long before it was the "in thing" to do. We were
both studying French and taught it to our 7th and 8th
graders through music and in
English class. I am saddened
to learn of her passing and send my sincere sympathy to her family and friends. Bless
her soul.

I first met Dena back in 05/06 when her Daughter Ann introduced her to the salon I was working at. I was one of her hairstylist back then. Dena was full of stories of her life. And she always talked about her beloved NY Yankees and her passion for opera music. She always made me smile, and laugh for that matter! She always had such a free spirit personality! I will miss her deeply!

Doing Dena's hair in Ohio for the last four to five years has been such a wonderful experience. She always greeted me with that sparkle in her eyes and smile on her face, saying how good it was to see me. We would share short coffee visits and she would tell me priceless stories of her beloved American Indians, and her love for the New York Yankees. She always complimented my "magic" touch when doing her hair and was quick to tell me if anyone can fix her hair from a long week, it was me. It was easy to see that she was such a loving, giving and truly caring women which I will never forget. She holds a special place in my heart, often reminding me of my own grandma who has passed many years ago. She will truly be missed by the many people she touched over the years.

I was Mrs. Lander's pharmacist. She had a gracious nature and an all encompassing kindness that only exists in a few select individuals. It was her kindness and trust that allowed me to receive a national pharmacy award in 2010, an award that was a direct result of a letter she had written.
I most enjoyed the stories she would tell me of her travels to and from Chataqua and her teachings of the Sioux Indians.
I would always make sure I had time to talk to Mrs. Lander because I could tell she was an extremely rare and special individual.
The first thing she ever asked me was whether or not I liked opera. Of course I did, how could anyone say no?
Many condolences to the surviving family members.

Dena and I met while we were working at Joint Neighborhood Project, and became friends. That friendship lasted for many many years, even when parted by miles. We often talked on the phone, and always there was laughter. Dena had a fun way of telling stories. Those tales ran from the time she spent working out West with the Indians, whom she loved dearly, to more recent times. One of the funniest things I remember at the moment, is when she had some Indian chief at her home. Suddenly he grabbed his rifle, and when she seemed somewhat alarmed, he said he heard a coyote out back. Dena laughed, because she had been listening to opera on her "box" which was in the kitchen, playing some wonderful aria. I remember laughing until my sides split, when she told me that story. There were serious times when we discussed mutual things about family. She loved hers more than they may ever know. Each and every one was very special to her. Dena will be very missed by me and others whom she knew. May she rest in peace.
