Obituary of Shirley M. Anderson
Shirley Mae Johnson Anderson, 87, of the Lutheran Retirement Home, formerly of 2923 Route 394, Ashville, and 11 Widrig Ave. Jamestown, passed away at 10:55 PM Tuesday (March 1, 2011) in WCA Hospital. She was born in Jamestown on April 24, 1923, the daughter of Frank Louis and Gertrude (Anderson) Johnson.
Shirley grew up on Camp Street Extension and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1940 with a business diploma. She worked as an Office Clerk at Crescent Tool Company for 15 years, then stayed home to raise a family, and later was employed by Walden Books for 11 years, retiring as Assistant Manager.
She was a very active Charter Member of Camp Street United Methodist Church, where she served on numerous committees, founded the Social Events Committee, and taught the kindergarten Sunday School class for well over 50 years. Shirley was proud that she taught three generations of one family in her class.
Shirley was very devoted to her family, extended family, and church family, and she loved to be out socializing, especially at Tim Horton's. Shirley truly enjoyed bargain hunting and the enormous shoe collection she acquired. She also collected clown figurines and red glass.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Paul G. Anderson, whom she married on October 21, 1955 in Frewsburg. She is also survived by daughters, Pamela K. Anderson and Debra J. (Nelson) Garifi, both of Jamestown; a grandson, Colton J. Garifi of Jamestown; a special niece, Lisa R. Barto, of Cleveland, Tennessee; and her church family.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, L. Gunnard Johnson, Paul C. Johnson, Robert E. Johnson, Wilbur L. Johnson, and Norman E. Johnson, and sisters, Ann E. Carlson and Lillie M. Noyd.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday March 5, 2011 in the Camp Street United Methodist Church. Rev. Kevin Costner, pastor of the church, and Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt, Lutheran Home Chaplain will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 PM Friday in the Lind Funeral Home.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Camp Street United Methodist Church, 110 Sanford Drive, Jamestown, NY 14701; Jamestown Community College Foundation, Phyllis Kraemer Memorial Fund, 525 Falconer Street, Jamestown, NY 14701; or the Chautauqua Blind Association, 510 West Fifth Street, Jamestown, NY 14701.
