Obituary of Helen L. Smith
Helen L. Smith, 87, of Kennedy, died Thursday August 25, 2011, in WCA Hospital.
She was born May 23, 1924, in Ashtabula, OH, a daughter of the late Henry and Ethel Northrup Heath.
She graduated from Findley Lake High School as salutatorian.
Prior to her retirement she was co-founder, owner and operator of Jamestown Draperies.
She was a member of Kennedy United Methodist Church, Mt. Sinai-Mecca Chapter and Fidelity Chapter of Order of Eastern Star for many years.
She was not only a talented professional seamstress, she enjoyed sewing as a hobby and gave many of her creations away as gifts to her family. Her other "favorite" pastime was supporting her husband in his antique tractor show activities.
Surviving are four children Ward Marvin (Kathleen) Smith of Mystic, CT, Calvin D. (Karen) Smith of Ithaca, NY, Jill E. (Thomas) Messinger of West Ellicott and Steven K. Smith of Kennedy; ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; a sister Shirley Heath of Florida and a brother Jerry Heath of Oklahoma.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ward H. Smith, Jr, whom she married February 8, 1946 and who died May 15, 2011 and three brothers Robert, Henry and Gordon Heath.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday September 4, 2011 in the Lind Funeral Home. Pastor Jennifer Delahoy will officiate.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Kennedy.
Friends will be received from 4-6 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home where an Eastern Star Memorial Service will be led at 3:45 p.m.
Memorials may be made to March of Dimes, Chautauqua County Humane Society or Shriner's Hospital.
