Obituary of Thomas W. Mitchell
Thomas W. Mitchell, 87, of 73 City View Ave. Jamestown, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Thursday (September 22, 2011) in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
A lifelong area resident he was born November 17, 1923 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late William C. and Florence Harding Mitchell.
Tom was a 1941 graduate of Jamestown High School and was very active in organizing his class reunions. He was also a graduate of Alfred University with a Bachelors Degree in Business.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from February 17, 1943 to February 13, 1946 during World War II.
Before his retirement he was an adjustor for the State Farm Insurance Company for many years.
He was a longtime member of the Unitarian Church of Jamestown, a member of the Class of 1941 Reunion Committee, the YMCA and the Y Men's Club. He was also a dedicated volunteer for the American Cancer Society, driving the cancer van to Buffalo several times a week.
Tom was a lifelong sailing enthusiast, spending many hours sailing on Chautauqua Lake. He was also an avid tennis player and enjoyed downhill skiing well into his 80's.
Surviving are two daughters Becky Mitchell and her husband James Zeckhauser of Chicago, IL, Sue Landy and her husband Brian of Jamestown, three grandchildren Dr. Michael Landy, Katie Landy both of Jamestown, Danny Zeckhauser of Chicago and a sister Florence Cline of Falconer.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Doris Wetter Mitchell whom he married June 12, 1950 and who died January 7, 1997, a son Daniel Thomas Mitchell who died February 21, 1975, two sisters Marion Hurley, Catherine "Kitty" Rogers and a brother John Mitchell.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011, in the Lind Funeral Home. Michelle Buhite will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
Friends will be received following the service at the YWCA Lake Lodge, 185 East Terrace Ave. Lakewood, NY
