I can't believe Spence is gone. I just received a card from his sister. One of my best memories of Spence is him driving Captain Crunch. I swear the deer in Princess Anne laid in wait for him, just so they could run in to his car. We spent many hours attending musical events in the Salisbury/Ocean City area. He introduced me to Deanna Bogart and many more people. He taught me how to kayak. I can't tell you how many hours we spent on weekends on the beach at Ocean City. He would run on the Boardwalk and I would ride my bike, then we would put up an umbrella and relax on the beach for the rest of the day.

Spence and I met at the Prendergast library in the early 70's. He gave me a ride on his scooter. I spent some time with Spence and his family and enjoyed Pat, Jack and Jo very much. Jo,we saw each other years ago in a drug store in Jamestown. I came across his notice while searching the PJ on line for a Jamestown woman. Here in California thinking of all of you fondly. I am sorry for your loss of Spence.

Dear Spene, Beth and I will always cherish the time we spent with you last July at the Scandinavian Festival. I never thought for a moment that would be the last time I saw you. I learned of your death yesterday afternoon (Christmas Day) during a phone call with Tomas. I regret (for my own sake) not being able to attend your memorial service. Everything others have said about you on this page is not only true but among our many fine memories of you. You and I often talked of one of our earliest shared memories when you let me ride along down Goose Creek into the lake on your 2 person kayak with my dog following right along. Just one of many fine adventures growing up in Ashville. Both Mary and Gary commented on your athletic chin, "The Jaw". I'm sure others remember your amazing juggling skill including balancing a lawnmower by the handle on "The Jaw". This time of year we would sing Tom Lear songs at the top of our lungs and laugh until we cried. Clearly, your sense of irony and humor, often self-deprecating, as well as intellect will be sorely missed by all of us. No one else would think to research the life of Otis the Frogboy and share it with me. We send sincere condolences to Pat, Jo and Jessica. Yours was a unique and well loved personality even if we didn't say it often enough. Sleep well dear prince.

I am so sorry to hear of Spencer's death. My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Haynes, Jo and extended family. I have many wonderful memories of Spencer and his family. I was so surprised to learn that he was a speech pathologist. I am also a speech pathologist. He was a very intelligent and fun loving person. I know he will be missed deeply. Each day is a gift to be appreciated and enjoyed!

I had the great privilege of counting Spencer as one of my friends. I met him years ago in online chat when he was using the name Hadley. What drew me to him was his intelligence, wit and one of a kind often zany personality. We spent time talking on line, on the phone and in correspondence. He and I had some great trips to museums and galleries in Washington and Baltimore with him-seeking out stuff that was off the beaten track. His sense of humor and wry sarcasm defined him in many ways. I will never forget Spencer-meeting him was one of the best things that ever happened to me and his loss is painful. But for us who knew him-he was a unique and wonderful man and we are all better for that opportunity.

Mrs. Haynes, Jo and Jessica, I am so very sorry for your loss. I have to believe as I knew him his Junior year at SWCS and Senior year at Panama, that although spirited and very funny, he enjoyed people and respected them in a manner that showed. Everyone knew he was genuine. My fondest memory of "the jaw" was when we were loaded up on the bus coming back from our senior trip in Canada, Spence was laying on the overhead luggage rack-not sitting in his seat and the guy counting heads didn't see him until he turned to his right and there was Spence looking at him eyeball to eyeball about 8" from this guys face and he jumped about a foot! I almost herniated myself laughing so hard. We all have stories of Spence like that. My prayers are with you all.

I am so sorry and shocked to learn of Spencer's passing. I knew him as a very sweet - albeit stubborn - young man. He was my classmate, my friend, and definitely one-of-a-kind. I have many good memories. He was proud of "The Jaw" and I love how he thrust it out into the world. He could play the William Tell Overture on that jaw. Bon voyage, Spencer. My condolences to his family.

Feel really sad for Spencer's family and friends and all that knew him. For me, brings back lots of great memories of Ashville and attending Panama Central School. My condolences to all.
