Libbie's Eulogy for Nonny posted a condolence

My Nonny was quite the character. You only had to be in her presence for a short while to experience “the NONNY effect.” As far as we know, she was the only one in the world with the name Ravanina. And just like the uniqueness of her name, Nonny was one of a kind herself.
Over the years, we have all laughed at her antics. That’s all we could do, was laugh and curl up in embarrassment. Once, Nonny, my mom, and I were talking and she told us about a recent dr visit. Nonny said the doctor told her she needed to lose weight. Nonny retorted, “I need to lose weight? What about your wife out there who’s a receptionist?”
Another time Nonny brought great pride to our family was at one of my Uncle Steve’s athletic meets. Although she was there to cheer on her son, Ever-So-Resourceful Nonny took it upon herself to do some grocery shopping. And by grocery shopping, I mean taking fruit and other items from the runner’s table and sneaking them into her purse.
Over the past two years, Nonny endured many hospitalizations. Often during these times, she became paranoid that someone was trying to kill her and harm her family. One such night, I volunteered to spend the night with her. Nonny wasn’t sleepy, so one of her visitors, a nurse, and I all walked around the hospital with her. Nonny showed her gratitude by pointing to each of us and telling us, “When I was younger, I was prettier than you, you, and you.” Later that same night, after she was tucked into bed, I left the room to use the bathroom. I told the sitter outside the door I was leaving. When I returned, “poor, innocent, sick Nonny” was out of bed and headed out the door.
This is just a sampling of the many humorous, embarrassing, and cringeworthy stories we have about Nonny. I hope some of you will take the time to share your own memories of Nonny. I mean, how many people can brag their grandparents got BANNED from Quality Markets?
However, especially in recent years, I realized that there was more to Nonny than her larger than life persona. She must have been so brave to come to America with my Poppy and two young children. Her English was broken and they came with nothing. They arrived in 1958, a time with few government and social programs to really help immigrants. This was also a time when being from another country was viewed in a negative manner.
However, despite many obstacles, Nonny worked very hard to provide for her family. She and my Poppy designed their dream home and owned several acres of land. We don’t know how she did it and when we asked, Nonny always, always, always gave credit to God. Nonny had very little education, because in her day and time, women didn’t go to school. In fact, she had the equivalent of less than a high school degree. But she was determined that her children and grandchildren would attend and complete college, and we did!
I like to think that some of my own personality, sense of humor, and spunk are inherited from Nonny. I now realize that the legacy of courage, determination, and success is within me, within each and every family member. As I carry Nonny, Poppy’s and my dreams onward, I remember and honor their efforts, their successes, and their unbelievable perseverance. I love my Nonny, and now that’s she up in heaven, I expect that she is doing what she can to find my future husband…and send him my way:)

Nonny was a wonderful lady and you were all lucky to have her for so long. I know it's a very tough time for all of you but hopefully in time, your memories will ease your pain. I'm sure she is now in a better place reunited with Poppy looking down at all of you and smiling.

Nonny, No Monk Around! I love you and I'm glad you and Poppy are reunited. Your time here on earth is unforgettable, to say the least. You have definitely left your mark; on each of individually and on the earth as a whole. I will miss you but I find comfort knowing that you are in a place where there is no anxiety, worry, pain, sadness, Italian guilt, or distress.
