Obituary of Samuel J. Castiglione
Samuel J. Castiglione, 90, formerly of 55 Roland Road Jamestown, died February 17, 2013 in Highland Hospital Rochester NY surrounded by his wife of 66 years and his children.
A Jamestown resident for 89 years, he was born June 4, 1922, the oldest child of the late Mike and Grace Caltagirone Castiglione.
Following graduation from Jamestown High School and Jamestown Business College he served in the US Army during WWII from 1942-45 in New Guinea and in the invasion of the Phillipines. He was a member of John W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW and Henry Moser Post 638 American Legion, Falconer.
He owned and operated Casty's Grocery for 42 years. Sam loved spending time with his family and his sense of humor was maintained to the end.
He was a communicant of Holy Apostles Parish at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he served as an usher.
Surviving are his wife the former Germina Rossetti, whom he married April 22, 1946; two children Joann (William) Ryan of Rochester, NY and Michael (Cynthia) Castiglione of Hickory, NC, daughter in law Deborah Castiglione of Jamestown; six grandchildren Richard (Amber)Walton, Julia Sumner, Michael (Laura) Castiglione, Gina(Lee) Whisnant, Joseph Castiglione and Andrea (Antonio) Benitez; 4 great grandchildren Keirick Sumner, Allison Castiglione, Samuel Benitez Castiglione, Logan Whisnant; sisters in law Maxine Castiglione, Irene Rizzo and brothers in law Paul Rizzo and Alfred Rossetti. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, 2 of whom are his godsons, Louis Rossetti and James Castiglione.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son Samuel Castiglione Jr.; a granddaughter Lisa Castiglione, a brother Anthony Castiglione and his two sisters Josephine Freligh and Della Lefler.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Apostles Parish at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor will be celebrant.
Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 9:30AM to 10:30AM in the Lind Funeral Home.
