Obituary of Harriet G. Levato

Harriet P. Levato, 97, formerly of 1615 West Third St. and Tanglewood Manor, passed away at 6:37 a.m. Sunday (January 27, 2013) in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. An area resident for most of her life, she was born May 30, 1915 in Ludlow, PA a daughter of the late C. Godfrey and Elsa Anderson Peterson. She was a 1932 graduate of Jamestown High School and a graduate of the White Plains Hospital School of Nursing, White Plains, NY. Harriet was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from May 23, 1941 to November 3, 1942 during World War II where she served as a general duty nurse. Before her retirement she was employed as a registered nurse for W.C.A. Hospital and had also worked for several doctor's offices and did private duty nursing in her later years. In earlier years she was employed by the Nassau County Welfare Department for several years. She was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in 1929 and was a longtime member of the Christ First United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women. She was a member and past president of the Chautauqua County Graduate Nurses Association, the American Association of Retired People, the Lakewood-Busti Golden Agers, a past vice commander of the Ira Lou Spring Post #149 American Legion, a member of the Thule Lodge and the W.C.A. Hospital Auxiliary. She was also an active volunteer for the W.C.A. Hospital Snack Shop and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She was also very active in the American Red Cross where she served as the head of the Council of Churches Blood Bank for the Long Island Red Cross blood donation from which she received an award for 13 years of service to the blood program in East Meadow, Long Island. Surviving is a sister Lois E. Johnson of Dunkirk, NY as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul L. Levato who died in 1976 and two sisters Velma Richardson and Betty Louise Labuer. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a. m. Saturday July 27, 2013 in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Natalie Hanson, pastor of the Christ First United Methodist Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Visitation will not be observed. Memorials may be made to the Christ First United Methodist Church, 1663 Lakeview Ave. Jamestown, NY 14701 r to a charity of one's choice.
