Obituary of Samuel T. Tyler

Samuel T. Tyler, Sr., 94, of 68 Magnolia Ave. W.E. formerly of Lakeside Dr. Bemus Point, passed away at 7:07 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014, in the home of his son on in Bemus Point. An area resident since 1924, he was born June 12, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA a son of the late Dr. Francis D. and Marie Trimle Tyler, Sr. Sam was a 1938 graduate of Campion Jesuit High School, in Prairie Du Chien, MI. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving from February 21, 1941 to August 10, 1945 during World War II. During his tour of duty he received the Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Bronze Star. Before his retirement in 1984, he was a salesman for several men's clothing stores including, J.C. Penney's, the former Robert Hall Store and Richmond Brothers. In earlier years he owned and operated the Ships Inn Restaurant for several years. He was a faithful communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood and was very active in various veteran's organizations including a member and past commander of the Robert P. Illig Post 47 Disabled American Veterans, past commander of the John W. Tiffany Post 53 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a past chaplain of the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion. He also served as past grand knight of the former Knights of Columbus Council 6176, Bemus Point and was a past faithful navigator of the Knights of Columbus Council 926, Jamestown. Sam was very active in community affairs as well where he organized the Jamestown Memorial Day Parade from 1947-2005 and of which he was Grand Marshall in 2005. He never rode in the parade as he always walked the parade route every year. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Babe Ruth World Series Parade and was a long time volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Program. Surviving are his wife the former M. Janice McCulla, whom he married April 30, 1946, seven sons; Samuel T. Tyler, Jr. of Brick, NJ, John F. Tyler of Tyron,NC, Michael W. (Alice) Tyler of Leland, NC, Patrick A. (Mary) Tyler of West Ellicott, Daniel J. (Ellen) Tyler of Bemus Point, Robert M. (Edith) Tyler of Estero, FL, Thomas E. (Mary Pat) Tyler of Derby, NY, a daughter; Kathleen P. (Douglas) Barmore of Gerry, NY, 24 grandchildren; Capt. Sean Tyler of Gaithersburg, MD, Ryan Tyler of New York City, Shannon Tyler of Astoria, NY, Michela Koch, Meagan Tyler both of Baltimore, MD, Diana Lette of Youngsville, NC, Justin Sabro of New York City, Jeannine Daugherty of Boco Raton, FL, Josh Tyler of Jamestown, Mallary Tyler of Buffalo, Daniel Tyler, Jr. of Mayville, Erin Tyler of Bemus Point, Timothy Tyler of Bonita Springs, FL, Matthew Tyler of Nashville,TN, Robert Tyler of Cape Coral, FL, Christopher Tyler of Labelle, FL, Brian Tyler of Alameda,CA, Nicholas Tyler of Derby, NY , Lorinda Quinn of Silver Creek, Bradley Ring of Miss., Derek Ring, Jeremy Barmore both of Jamestown, Douglas Barmore, Jr. of Houston, TX, 21 great grandchildren and a sister Marianne Panebianco who subsequently passed away on January 19, 2014. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Michelle Bloom, three sisters; Jane Ayers, Joan Tyler, Viola Tyler and two brothers; Francis D. Tyler, Jr. and William Tyler. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood. The Rev. Piotr Zaczynski, pastor of Sacred Heart and The Rev. Raymond Donohue will be celebrants. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service and a Rosary Service will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. today.
