Obituary of Richard A. Sedlack
Richard Albert Sedlack
February 24, 1931 - April 12, 2014
Dick Sedlack passed peacefully in his home with his "critters" at the age of 83.
He was born and raised in the Cleveland, OH area, the son of the late Andrew and Susan Sedlack. After
graduating Berea High School, he joined the US Air Force, stationed in Fort Walton Beach Florida. He
married Violet Hirepan, and had two children, Mark and Cheryl.
After his service to our country, he worked for the Retail Credit Company as an investigator, and later
for Nationwide Insurance as an agent in Chardon, OH. He moved to Jamestown in the mid-70's, and
operated his insurance agency at 500 Cherry Street until he retired in 1997. In 1985 he completed
construction of his dream house, a passive solar home of his own design. He was a volunteer with both
the Gerry and Fluvanna Fire departments, and was instrumental in the design and construction of FFD
Station 2.
As a car enthusiast, he was a long time member and past President of the Chautauqua Lake Region
Antique Automobile Club, and the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. His 1930 Chrysler 66 "Greta" was
seen in many local parades and car shows, and for many years he was a judge at the annual World Series
of Cars at Bergman Park. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion. As a lifelong
hunter, he told many stories of the trophies, pranks and camaraderie from the cabin he built in Kinzua,
PA. His kids have many memories of time spent in the woods with him.
His favorite pastime was sitting on the patio in the evening, with his wife Emmi, listening to the chorus
from the pond while smoking his pipe after a hard day's work.
He is survived by his daughter Cheryl Weinert, son Mark Sedlack (Valerie), stepdaughter Diane
Hirgstetter ( Buddy Bell), stepson Chris Hirgstetter (Karen), grandchildren Sydney and Zachary Sedlack,
Elizabeth Harper, Jessica Gordon and Kaitlyn Hirgstetter, great-grandson Gabriel Harper and his siblings,
Robert Sedlack, and Marilyn Engle. He was preceded in death in by his wife Susan in 1988, his wife
Emmi in 2011, and his brother George Sedlock in 2011.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fluvanna Fire Dept., 3536 Fluvanna Ave., Jamestown,

Dick will be most remembered for his generous caring nature, and wry sense of humor which included
many a spun tale and pulled leg. And so, we'll honor him with a celebration of his life on April 26th, 1:30
pm at the Fluvanna Volunteer Fire Department, 3536 Fluvanna Ave., Jamestown, NY. Please leave
your suits and ties at home and bring your favorite memory or story to share, and join us for a bite to eat
after a remembrance and prayer.
