Obituary of A. Donald Johnson
A. Donald Johnson, 90, of 475 Hunt Rd., W.E., passed away at 11:08 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015, in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
A lifelong area resident, he was born September 2, 1924 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Axel Hjalmar and Anna Sophia Johnson Johnson.
Don was a 1942 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force serving as a pilot during World War II from November 16, 1942 until his discharge as a Captain in 1945. He was a member of the Station 146 Tower Association, Seething Airfield, Norfolk, VA.
Before his retirement he was co-owner of the former Baldwin Jewelers, Inc. in downtown Jamestown for over 40 years.
He was a member of the Zion Covenant Church and was a past chairman of the Church Council and also a past Deacon. He was a very active member of the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America serving as Scout Master for several years. He was a past President and charter member of the Jamestown Sertoma Club and very active with the Jamestown Habitat for Humanity where he received the Citizen of the Year Award in 1997. Don was an active supporter of Southwestern Central School sporting events and other school activities.
Surviving are four children, Bruce (Donna) Johnson, Cheryl Andrews both of Jamestown, NY, Rita Johnson of Meriden, CT, Janette (Bill) Salter of Lakewood, NY, ten grandchildren, Todd (Stephanie) Johnson of Jackson Hole, WY, Christine Kuligowski of Bejung China, Tom (Lisa) Johnson, Kristin Salter, Alex Salter all of Rochester, NY, Eric (Jessica) Menezes, Caitlin (Dan) Morales bothof Jamestown, Timothy (Heather) Tuller of Rocky Hill, CT, Michael (Kelly) Tuller of Fairfield, CT, Amanda Tuller of Meriden, CT. 11 great grandchildren, three brothers, Paul R. Johnson, Ralph U. (Carolyn) Johnson, Marvin L. Johnson all of Jamestown, three sisters, Marilyn (Dan) Osman of Marietta, GA, Anna Marie (Jim) Kelley of AK, Sandra (Jim) Tidquist of Jamestown.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Phyllis Pearson Johnson whom he married July 4, 1945 and who died May 5, 1999, a sister Sonya Van Epps and a great granddaughter Sophia Phyllis Tuller who died January 24, 2012.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in Zion Covenant Church. The Rev. Rick Miller, pastor and Rev. Steve Kilburn, assistant pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-5 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home.
