Obituary of Patricia B. Kinney
Patricia Beverly Young Kinney of Baker Street Extension passed away peacefully at Brookdale Lakewood Assistive Living on Saturday, July 9, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. 91 years young, she was born in Jamestown on July 4, 1925, the daughter of the late Gilbert and Bertha Olson Young. Patricia graduated from Jamestown High School in 1943 and matriculated to State Teachers College of Fredonia, earning a BS in Education and Music in 1947. She also completed several graduate courses at Fredonia.
A lifelong Jamestown resident, Pat was a third grade teacher at Persell Elementary School for 30 years. She began her teaching career under the direction of Ms. Marjorie Sherman and was a remarkable teacher, revered by those who were fortunate enough to enter her classroom. Her students were encouraged to excel and they were rewarded for their efforts and hard work. She was awarded a Life Membership by the Persell P.T.A. when she retired from teaching in 1987.
Pat was an avid golfer and graced the pages of The Post Journal throughout the years with low golf scores, putts and numerous championships; and yes, even a hole in one! In addition, she was repeatedly acknowledged for her high bowling scores. She was also a passionate Duke Blue Devils fan and considered herself Coach K's sixth man on the court.
Pat was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Southern Chautauqua County Retired Teachers Association, The Reg Lenna Center and Willow Run Golf Course. She was also a volunteer at Jamestown General and WCA Hospitals, as well as The Reg Lenna Center for The Arts.
Surviving are two loving daughters: Sharron Henderson (Rhoe) of Lakewood, N.Y. and Kathleen Evans (Mark) of Gaithersburg, MD; a brother, Allen Young of Plymouth, MI; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Pat was adored by her three grandchildren, Christopher Henderson of Lakewood, Brittany Snyder (Nick) of Fairport, N.Y. and Jonathan Evans of Gaithersburg. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have crossed her path.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland J. Kinney, whom she married June 28, 1947 and who died April 27, 1988; and two brothers, Donald and Kent Young.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 18 in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Alan W. Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service, from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 904 W. 3rd St., or the Southern Chautauqua County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Fund, c/o The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 418 Spring St., both Jamestown, N.Y. 14701; The American Cancer Society, 101 John James Audubon Pkwy.
