Obituary of Clifton C. Thompson, Jr.

Clifton C. "Bud" Thompson Jr., 72, passed away Thursday August 11, 2016 following a brief illness. He was born September 14, 1943 in Johnstown, PA the son of the late Clifton C. and Rilla Cook Thompson Sr. Bud received his Bachelor's degree from Gannon University and his Master's degree in Mathematics from the University at Buffalo. Prior to retirement in 2003, he taught mathematics at Southwestern Central High School for 37 years. He served as chairman of the math department and coached Volleyball and Football while at Southwestern. Bud was treasurer of the Chautauqua County Athletic Association for 20 years; served as a Southwestern Area Federal Credit Union board member on the Credit Committee for 25 years; served as President of Southwestern Teacher's Association, also Vice President and head negotiator for many years; and served as a member of the Lakewood Library Board. He was a member of Lakewood Rod and Gun Club; Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lakewood; and was Co-president with his wife of Southwestern Football Parents. He was an avid Racquetball and Pickleball player; enjoyed bowling and golfing; was an avid reader; and in later years enjoyed flower gardening. Bud will be remembered most for his devotion to his family as a husband, father, and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Janet Steward Thompson; four sons, Clifton Scott Thompson of Syracuse, NY; Gary David (Barbara) Thompson of Fredonia, NY; Jeffrey Thomas (Dana) Thompson of Pendleton, NY; Michael William (Amy) Thompson of Kennedy, NY; 10 grandchildren, Jaymes Thompson, Audrey (Nate) Griewisch, Jacob Thompson, Joshua Thompson, Justyn Thompson, Hannah Thompson, Emily Thompson, Erin Thompson, Matthew Thompson, and Erich Thompson; two brothers, David Thompson of Fairview, PA; Tommy Thompson of Lake City, PA; and a sister, Sandra Barr of Hermitage, PA. A private service was held. Visitation was not observed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation, 1411 K St. NW #800, Washington, DC 20005; or the Lakewood Memorial Library, 12 W Summit Street, Lakewood, NY 14750.
