Obituary of Sam A. Caruso

Sam A. Caruso, 87, of 491 Fairmount Ave. passed away at 1:57 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2017, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident, he was born January 7, 1930 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Vincent and Mary Rose Catroppa Caruso. Sam was a 1947 graduate of Jamestown High School and earned his Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving for two years during the Korean War. Before his retirement in 1986, he was employed by the Jamestown Public School System for 29 years. He began his teaching career as an elementary school teacher and served as Principal of Fairmount Ave. School and retired as Principal of Bush Elementary School. He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church and a member of the Ira Lou Spring Post 149, American Legion and Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. He was very active in the Jamestown Boys and Girls Club Alumni Association, growing up as a youth attending the Boys and Girls Club activities. He was also a member of the Jamestown Retired Teachers Association, the New York State Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the National Education Association. He will be remembered as an avid gardener and enjoyed coin collecting. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Germaine Mourer Caruso whom he married August 25, 1962, two nieces, Maria Rose Taylor of Lakewood, NY, Maria Rose Fred of Jamestown and three nephews, Vincent Joseph Caruso of FL, Joseph M. Caruso of Falconer and Vincent C. Caruso of Jamestown. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Thomas and Sebastian Caruso and an infant sister, Theresa Caruso. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell G. Duffy, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 6:45 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
