Doug, Maureen, Erin and Mickey,
On behalf of the Johnson & Katulich family, I wanted to extend our condolences. The right words will never exist, but we can only hope that your family grows stronger in it's broken spot as a result of your loss. Your family has always served as a wonderful support system and a beautiful example of a close and tight-knit family. Matt always had a very big heart and he loved being an uncle. His friends love him with one of the realest loves I have ever witnessed among friends. His students absolutely adored him, and he adored them. And hopefully you find comfort in knowing just how special he was to every single person who he ever met. Who Matt was as a person was the result of having such a special family and the last thing he would want is for his family to change as a result of losing him. I am so sorry that any of you have ever had to endure the feelings that you're experiencing right now.

Mickey & Erin and Families,
My thoughts and prayers to the families on the recent loss of Matt. Despite the sadness that happens with anyone's loss, it was comforting for me to read of Matt's successes and how he touched the lives of his students in classes and on the soccer field.
When you were children it was my pleasure to have you in my art classes at Washington School, and you left an impression of being really great kids. I tend to think you have all turned into really great adults.
Always hold eternally the many memories you have of Matt.

Deat Mr. and Mrs. Berlin and Family,
Like everyone else who knew and admired Matt, I was so saddened to learn of his passing. From the moment I met Matt, I realized how very special he was. He immediately made a lasting impression as a young man of character and commitment toward others, especially the students. I am so very sorry for your loss. Rest assured that Matt made a very positive impact on the students, his colleagues and the families at Metro School. I am grateful that you shared him with us, though all too short he left.

I want to express my deepest sympathy and sadness I feel for Matts passing. I live in Charlotte for the pass 13 yrs I worked with disabled children for ten yrs here. Matt was the one who always handed me Marybeth when I picked her up from school. I never knew his name nor did he know I was Nate Gudz's mom . I want you to know I thought he was amazing how he worked and loved those kids. Nate and Matt were on the same soccer team when they were little. They also were in some of the same classes together he thinks very highly of Matt. I feel so bad we never put two and two together on who we were. That he also was from Jamestown. He was always smiling when I saw him. He worked hard with the kids and truly loved them. He was a wonderful man. My son and I are truly sorry and sadden by the loss of Matt . He was loved and will be missed very deeply!! My sincere heartfelt sadness and may god comfort you in this difficult time you will be in my prayers sincerely with love Kathleen Orlando Gudz

Doug, Maureen, Erin, Mickey and family,
We were so sorry to hear about Matt. There are truly no "right" words to say at such a sad time as this. Since we heard we have been bringing up memories of long ago; JAYS soccer and the picnics, baseball, hosting Babe Ruth world series kids. We remember when the twins were little and how we couldn't tell them apart!!!
No parent should have to go through such sadness and sorrow.
Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
May God give you strength and may you find peace.
God Bless,
The Heggartys

My children and I lived in Jamestown for 13 years and they grew up there. Attended Middle School and Jamestown High School with Matt and his brother. We were connected through baseball and the fact that Maureen Berlin and I were the only "Maureens" we knew! As it often happens, after High School, we were all off and running and ended up living, working and travelling all over the world. But when you do that with your life, you end up holding on to memories from the places you've been. With the passage of the years, you tend to remember the kindness the most. Doug and Maureen were nothing but kind and caring to us, and Matt learned that from them. We were devastated to learn of Matt's passing, and our collective heart goes out to y'all. Please know that time and distance will never diminish the memories we have of a kind young man with a great sense of humor and dedicated heart. As the tears stain our faces, we are sending you a group hug and assurance that he will never be forgotten.

Sending my family's condolences on the loss of Matthew. I remember playing with Matt and Mickey way back when in JAYS soccer in elementary school on Co-Ed teams with Doug as coach, and their friendliness back when I saw them again at JHS. As a teacher now myself who has taught severely special needs students, I can only imagine the immense impact that Matt had on his students in Charlotte. My thoughts are with you all during this time.

Dear Maureen and Doug,
My heart breaks for all of you.I will always remember when you moved into our neighborhood with your beautiful family.
Matt and Mickey were just infants and my daughter Jenny was so intrigued by the twins all she could do was talk about them. She would go over to your house and play with Erin but her real excuse was to come and help with the twins.
Little did we know that she was practicing for welcoming her own twins in 2010 Aiden and Addison. Maureen, you were such a great role model for my daughter. You showed her how to love and cope with two little babies at the same time.
Doug you have been a great father to all three of your children.
you have been loved by so many children that you have touched through your years as a wonderful baseball Coach. Wee know how much you enjoyed coaching Matt and Mickey when they were old enough to play ball
Matt got his caring and love for kids through your working with all young children and even when they got older they still respect their great coach.
I know that Matt will be missed by all of the lives that he has touched in Charlotte NC
please let us know if you need anything.
We love you and your beautiful family.

Matt was such a dear young man. I was on the interview team when Matt came to Metro School...he was the best choice. Little did we know how involved he would be at Metro. He found his true career choice and loved "our children" as much as we all did! I have been gone for 8+ years but know what a family Metro School is and his presence will be missed. It was truly a blessing to know Matt. Fly free young man and know that your "love" made a difference in our lives.
