Obituary of Shirley M. Gill
Shirley M. Gill, age 93, of the Lutheran Retirement Home, died Friday, July 7, 2017. She previously resided at 29 Fairfax Rd for over 50 years and later on Roland Rd.
Shirley Marguerite Dahl was born December 2, 1923, to Arthur Emanuel and Violet Larson Dahl. She was a lifelong resident of Jamestown.
Shirley and George Thomas Gill were married on May 22, 1942. Together they had five children: Thomas G., Timothy J., Terry A., Pamela J., and Arthur B. Gill.
George died on October, 9, 2010.
She was a member of the Camp Street Methodist Church.
Shirley was a 1941 graduate of Jamestown High School. Although employed for a few years after raising her children, most of her life was spent being a loving mother and George's devoted wife. They were married 68 years. She enjoyed lifelong friendships and was an exceptionally kind person. Her positive outlook on life was a gift to all who knew her.
Proud to be Scandinavian, she enjoyed reflecting back on her Swedish heritage and ancestors. Her careful frugality, style of humor, and holiday traditions were a statement of this. She had both a sensible Swedish outlook and a ready ability to enjoy a good laugh.
Shirley moved to the Lutheran campus in 2006, living at Carlson Towers, Hultquist Place, and finally, at the Retirement Home. She was a friendly, familiar face to so many of the kind and caring staff who treated her well and made her feel loved.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two of her children, Pamela Jean Gill in 1951 and Arthur Barry "Butch" Gill in 1976, and two brothers, John A. Dahl, and her twin, Sherman Dahl.
She is survived by three sons: Thomas G. Gill of Winter Springs, FL, Timothy J. Gill of Milton, VT, and Terry A. Gill of Santa Fe, NM, and her close friend, Phyllis Noble of TN. She has six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Foundation, 715 Falconer St., Jamestown, NY, 14701
Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
