Obituary of Karen P. Snyder
Rev. Karen P. "Kit" Snyder, 63, of Oakfield, died Monday, December 4, 2017, at her family home in Ashville, NY, surrounded by her family, after battling breast cancer for more than a year.
She was born in Jamestown, NY, on June 3, 1954, a daughter of Theodore H. and Winifred (Kemp) Husted, who predeceased her. On December 27, 1979, Kit was married to Dr. David J. Snyder, who survives. She is also survived by her sons Jeremy J. Snyder (and fiancée Jess) of W. Columbia, SC, and Wesley F. (and wife Kayla) Snyder of Sioux Falls, SD, her granddaughters Rya, Tinsley, and Adalay Snyder of Sioux Falls, her sisters Judith Husted of Thomaston, CT, and Rev. Rebecca (and husband Rev. Edward) Patterson of Franklin, PA, and seven nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Chautauqua Central School and Davidson College, Pastor Kit earned a Master of Divinity at Duke University and an MBA at St. Bonaventure University. She was ordained an Elder in the Western New York Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1981 and served the Weston's Mills, Allegany, Limestone, Killbuck and Bowmansville UM Churches, First UMC of Fredonia, Hope UMC of Niagara County, and the Brockport, Oakfield, and West Barre UM Churches, and was involved for a number of years with the camping ministries of the conference. Kit and David taught for a year at Africa University in Zimbabwe, and spent a sabbatical year circumnavigating the globe on Semester At Sea.
Rev. Snyder was an accomplished organist and enjoyed travelling, knitting, playing Scrabble, and building decks and shelving. She loved sailing and the view of Chautauqua Lake from the family home on 'the Hill,' especially the sunrises. She also loved canoeing and camping, and working on the family's cabin.
A memorial service will be held at the Lakewood United Methodist Church, 164 Shadyside Ave, Lakewood, NY 14750, on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Paul Robinson, and the Rev. Ted Anderson officiating.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service in the church.
