I was unable to attend last nights visitation but wanted to send my condolences to all of you. Mary Ellen was a kind and thoughtful woman who I grew to admire the many years I worked with her at SW Middle School. She was so patient with the many students that would come into the office and always had a smile and a kind word for each and everyone of them. Things were never the same in the office after she retired. May the wonderful memories you have of her give you comfort during this difficult time. Martha Kettle Johnson and family

I taught at Southwestern Central High School for over thirty years and during the first part of my career Mary Ellen was the person you called if you needed to be absent. If it were a long range situation then you called her number at the middle school; but as was often the case if it were a last minute problem you would be calling her home number quite early in the morning. She was always so patient and never made you feel you were interrupting her morning in any way. We, teachers, used to say that Mary Ellen was unflappable in all areas of her job as middle school secretary. She was truly the power behind the throne for many years. I know she and Don were very respected members of the Lakewood community and they certainly raised lovely children. I am especially thinking of you, Jennifer (and Bob); it is so difficult to become an orphan no matter what age you are when it happens. Sending thoughts and prayers to the entire family during this time of loss and mourning.

We fondly remember one Christmas Day when Mary Ellen had Christmas Dinner with all the Schlicks. After dinner Mary Ellen and Rev. Phil found the television and watched a golf tournament together, commenting back and forth the whole time and really enjoying the game. What an unlikely combination! We were all amazed at their connection.
