Obituary of Roger W. Edborg

Roger W. Edborg, 87, of Lakewood, NY, formerly of 2157 Willard St. Ext. in Jamestown, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 while in California. He was the husband of the late Kay Scriven Edborg whom he married June 22, 1957 and who died November 5, 2016. A lifelong area resident, he was born in Jamestown on October 10, 1932 and was the son of the late Julius and Dorothy Hendrickson Edborg. Roger was a 1950 graduate of Jamestown High School. He served in the US Navy from 1952 to 1954 and skied for the Navy while in Switzerland and Naples, Italy. In early years a pipe fitter for Sandberg Sprinkler, Roger then founded Edborg's TV and Appliance in 1955 with his father, Julius, and soon after his lifelong friend and business partner, Ernie Hendrickson, joined them. Edborg's sponsored many Babe Ruth baseball teams during the years and at one point in the 1970's was the largest Magnavox dealer in the country. He also enjoyed hosting the show "Short Waves" on several area radio stations. He was able to attend the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, specifically the hockey silver and 'Miracle On Ice' gold medal rounds, where he videotaped both games with equipment from the store. Roger was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church and throughout the years served on pastoral search committees, finance committees, the church Council, as an usher and a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Sertoma Club, Jaycees, Boys & Girls Club and Moonbrook Country Club where he was a past Member-Guest Tournament champion. Roger loved skiing all of his life and in addition to his Navy experience also began ski jumping, at one point winning a jumping event at Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, Canada. He was a co-founder of the Jamestown Ski Club and a ski instructor into his 80's teaching youth, including all of his own children and grandchildren. He received his Professional Ski Instructors Certification (Certified Alpine Eastern Division) in his 70's. Surviving are five children: David (Lisa) Edborg of Rochester, Tim (Lianne) Edborg of Lakewood, NY, Todd (Katie) Edborg of North Carolina, Scott Edborg of Saco, ME and Amy (Dan) Morando of Los Angeles, CA; ten grandchildren: Andrew, Taylor, Cal, Brielle, Christian, Maxx, Noah, Sammy, William and Bella; four step-grandchildren: Alyson, Sydney, Grayson and Libby and four step-great-grandchildren; and a step-brother, Rick Johnson; and two nieces, Nancy Allen and Sherry Smith. In addition to his wife, Kay, parents, Julius and Dorothy and step-mother, Agnes Peterson Johnson Edborg, Roger was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Heather Lefford Edborg; sister, Joyce Edborg Pfirman and nephew, Thomas Pfirman; and a step-brother, Robert Johnson. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 25 in First Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel K. Nagle will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
