Obituary of Richard C. Lisciandro

Richard Clarence Lisciandro passed away at home surrounded by family on April 20, 2020, after a long and courageous fight against Leukemia. During his incredible lifetime, he played many roles, as devoted father, son, longtime partner, and grandfather. He was born in Jamestown, New York on March 26th, 1936. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Charles and Mary Genevieve (Paterniti), two brothers, Robert and John, and one sister, Mary Jane Lisciandro. Richard graduated from Jamestown High School in 1954, earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of Buffalo in 1958, and was acknowledged for his scholarship and collegiality as a senior with the T.R. McConnell Award. At the University of Buffalo, Richard was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, the Bison Head, and chaired many student council functions. Richard went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine in 1962 and completed an internship at Buffalo Children's Hospital, 1962-1963. Dr. Lisciandro served our country in the United States Army as a pediatrician from 1964-1968 beginning at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, during which time he completed a two-year residency at William Beaumont General Army Hospital. Richard then moved to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he continued his post-residency service at the Ireland Army Hospital. He retired from military duty in 1968 as a Major and then moved back to his hometown, Jamestown, NY. He practiced pediatric medicine for 46-years and was awarded WCA Physician of the Year in 2006. It was not uncommon for family to be recognized by our surname because of the lasting impression he made on so many families throughout his four plus decades as a pediatrician. Remarkably, for some families, he'd taken care of them, their children, and their grandchildren. During his illness, he was cared for by a physician, who to his astonishment, he had delivered as a baby. In 1992, he and Dr. Bill Toms founded Jamestown Pediatric Associates where he practiced until his retirement in 2007. He has taken care of three generations of families in Jamestown and its surrounding region. Following retirement, he opened The Oaks Bed and Breakfast Hotel on West Third Street in Jamestown in 2008, with Joe Haight. Richard leaves behind his longtime partner, Joe Haight, and their 4 Wheaton terriers, Reilly and Riggs, Polo and Rosie, who have provided him great joy. He also leaves behind his sons, Gregory (Stephanie), Spicewood, Texas, John, Jamestown, NY, and three daughters, Denise, New Rochelle, NY, Kimberly (Clayton Millard), and Kelly, both from Rochester, NY: and 12 grandchildren: Noah, Hannah, Sarah, Joshua, Abigail, Madelynn, Lucas, Jonathan, Ava, Zoe, Sierra and Skyler. Dr. Lisciandro was a well-respected physician. He was wise and loving with a witty sense of humor and a truly contagious laugh, always striving for excellence; a trait he passed onto us. He was gracious in how he faced both his life and his illness with such strength, courage, hope and love. Richard will be sadly missed by many and will forever live in our hearts.
