Obituary of John W. Sorenson
John W. Sorenson, 75, of Jamestown, NY, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020, in UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA, following complications of a stroke and pneumonia.
He was born August 8, 1945, a son of the late Wesley and Helen Sorenson.
John was a graduate of Jamestown High School and joined the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois and was medically discharged following boot camp.
John worked at the Jamestown Automobile Club (AAA) and for the City of Jamestown parking meter division, and also for many years for Chautauqua County Meals on Wheels.
Being a lifelong musician, John was lead vocalist and guitarist in several bands in the Jamestown area playing several venues like The Golden Gloves, Gordy's, and the Melody Inn with the bands, New Brick Window, The Leftovers, Mirror Image and the Cady-Sorenson Duet. He also played in venues in Buffalo like the Glen Park Casino, The Club and The Inferno.
He enjoyed hunting, golf and attending air shows. He was very knowledgeable about war planes, especially the P51 Mustang. He served as a committee member for several airport events.
He was an avid Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan. He loved the Beatles and knew Beatles trivia like no one else. One of his biggest thrills was attending a Beatles concert in 1964.
John is survived by a brother-in-law; Gary (Susan) Wykoff, a sister-in-law; Elaine Wykoff both of Meadville, PA, two nieces; Dana Tiller of Meadville, PA and Gina (Shane) Cantrell of Hamilton, MT.
He was preceded in death by his wife the former Sandra L. Wykoff Sorenson whom he married May 22, 1971 and who died April 2, 2020, a sister, Karen and brother-in-law Neil Hanley.
The family would like to thank Betty Sundquist and John Watkins for the many errands they did for John and also to his lifelong friend Mike Cady for his many years of friendship. Also thank you to the Zweig family, Sheila, Ivan and Jacob, for being such wonderful neighbors all these years.
In keeping with John's wishes, he donated his body to the University of Buffalo Medical School for medical research. His family will plan a memorial service at a later date.
