Obituary of Joseph E. Mitchell

Joseph E. Mitchell, 82, of Dewittville, NY and Jupiter, Fla., died Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida. He was born August 14, 1938 in Arlington, MA, the son of the late James E. and Mary Alice Mack Mitchell. Joe served in the Army Reserves. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Stonehill College in Easton, MA. He was an Internal Revenue Agent with the IRS from 1961 to 1970. Upon leaving the Internal Revenue Service he became an Enrolled Agent and opened his own accounting firm in Jamestown, NY until his retirement. Joe was a member of SS Peter & Paul Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a founding member of the Lawson Center and was a member of the Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club, serving as Commodore in 1974. While wintering in Florida Joe enjoyed volunteering at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum. Joe enjoyed sailing, biking, squash and golf, and was a marathon runner. He always looked forward to gathering with his friends, the 'Dirty Dozen' and the 'B Team'. Surviving are two sons: Kevin (Mary) Mitchell of Andover, OH and Brian (Betsy) Mitchell of Jamestown; five grandchildren: Ryan Mitchell, Kayla (Gavin) Custer, Patric (Kyla Hill) Mitchell, Melissa (Ted) Schroeder and Aaron Cole; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Alice Mitchell of Cape Cod, MA and Martha Burger of Nashua, NH; two nieces: Alison (Jarrod Smith) Burger and Meagan (Danny) Paul; as well as Joe's companion of many years, Carol White. Service will be announced at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Chautauqua Cemetery.
