Obituary of George E. Ciancio

George E. Ciancio, 85, formerly of 2 Rowley Court, died Monday May 17, 2021, in Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing. He was born March 28, 1936, in Jamestown, a son of the late Tom and Mary Augustine Ciancio. He attended Ss Peter and Paul Catholic School through 9th grade and was an honor graduate of Jamestown High School in 1954. In 1958 he graduated from University of Buffalo with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy. He served in the US Army from 1959-61, stationed at the 20th Station Army Hospital, Nuremberg, Germany. Active in high school, he was business manager of the JHS "Red and Green" yearbook and member of Key Club, "Pretenders" acting club, Spanish Club and National Honor Society. At the University of Buffalo he was student editor of the "Pharmacy School Newsletter." While in the Army he was founder and editor-in-chief of "Pulsebeat" newspaper for the 20th Hospital area. On returning home, he continued his newspaper activities as editor of the "Jaycee's Newsletter" in Jamestown from 1962-63. Active in community affairs, he was a former trustee and deputy mayor of the Village of Celoron; held offices of president and vice president of the Falconer Businessmen's Association; held offices of president and treasurer of Chautauqua County Pharmaceutical Society and later was a member and chairman of the Town of Ellicott Planning Board. George was a pharmacist at Landy Drugs and North Main Pharmacy and was a long-time pharmacist and manager of Carlson Pharmacy in Falconer for 1962-92 and the 9 years as a supervising pharmacist at Quality Market Pharmacy in Falconer until his retirement in 2002. George loved music and performed in musicals in college and in the Army and earlier as a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Club under Sarita Weeks. He was a proud member of the Ss Peter and Paul Church Choir for 34 years. George was a quiet, family man and loved playing cards and board games with family and friends. He loved to dance and met his wife at the local Arthur Murray Studio. Even in retirement he enjoyed volunteering at the Lutheran Home, transporting patients to their appointments. His good-natured smile and friendliness made him liked by all who knew him. He especially enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Surviving are two sons Thomas (Karen Kaminski) Ciancio of Forestville and George (Elizabeth) Ciancio, Jr of Jamestown and a granddaughter Madeline Ciancio of Jamestown. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Calcesi Ciancio, whom he married February 8, 1964 and who died February 24, 2021; two brothers John and Anthony Ciancio and two sisters Julia Tuccio and Elizabeth Plano. A walk-through visitation will be held from 10-11 am Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
