Obituary of David H. Vennberg

Rev. David H. Vennberg, 95, of Jamestown, NY, formerly of Sugar Grove, PA, passed away at 12:11 am, Monday, June 28, 2021, in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center. He was born October 21, 1925, in Fitchburg, MA, a son of the late David S. and Anna K. Engholm Vennberg. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II. As a member of the 106th infantry, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was a captured as a prisoner of war, and later received the Purple Heart Award. Pastor Dave received his bachelor's degree from Fitchburg State University, his master's degree in education from Penn State University and a Master of Divinity degree from North Park Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL. Following his years in seminary, he was called to the Mission Covenant Church in Sugar Grove, PA where he served as pastor until his retirement in 1988. He was also a teacher and Principal for the Lander Elementary School in Lander, PA for many years. After retirement he served as visitation pastor for Zion Covenant Church in Jamestown. He was a beloved pastor, teacher, and mentor, sharing the love of God in word and deed with many people. He was a member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans. As a skilled woodworker, he volunteered at the Toy Shoppe in Warren, PA. Surviving is a sister, Elsa Whitmore of West Boylston MA, a sister-in-law, Jean Landin of Jamestown, his nephews, David (Judith) Whitmore, Wendell (Cecelia) Landin, Dennis Landin, Kent (Lisa) Landin, his nieces, Linda Peterson, Marcia Peterson, and many great nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Grace I. Nordstrom Vennberg , who died January 10, 2020 and a sister, Esther Peterson. A memorial service and visitation for Rev. Vennberg will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Mission Covenant Cemetery, Sugar Grove, PA.
