I am sorry to hear of Jon's passing. I knew Jon for several years from teaching skiing at Peek n Peak with him. He was always fun to ski with and he enjoyed teaching skiing and introduced the sport and touched the lives of many new skiers. I recently skied a run with Jon just a couple of weeks ago in March at the Peek by a pure chance meeting and ride up the lift and we talked about his trip to Antartica which he seemed to enjoy very much. This is so sudden and hurts me to think of your loss and that this was a result of an accident in the sport he treasured. I will be praying for Jon and the family. - Mark Cecchetti

I was so sorry to hear of Jon's passing. I interviewed him shortly after I started at Behrend twelve years ago, and jumped at any opportunity to do so after that. He was fun to talk to, but also interesting and authentic. I know how much he was looking forward to new adventures in his retirement and I'm deeply sorry that he was robbed of that. I'm glad I had one last chance to interview him last year. https://behrend.psu.edu/news-events/school-publications/school-engineering-publications/engineering-news-2022/meckley-has-left-building ~ Heather Cass

I will miss Jon and his genuine laugh. I first met him many years ago when I was teaching Technical Writing at Behrend. Jon worked with me to create an appropriate curriculum for engineering students and even a special section for plastics students. We had a lot of fun reviewing grammar issues - his and the students! His dedication to students and to Behrend was impressive and infectious. He was a blessing to all who know him. My love, prayers, and condolences go out to his family.

To Kim and Jon’s family:
Jon was many things to me,
My IT guy and general contractor
My vacation planner and tour guide
My navigator who took the elevator rather than the stairs to make sure I didn’t get lost
My host for dinner and a movie who made sure Kim didn’t just serve veggies
Always ready with a joke to make sure we didn’t take ourselves to seriously
Often referred to himself in third person but always the first to offer help or guidance
Someone who accepted my crazy odd family as if we were perfectly normal
But most of all my friend. One final fist bump Jon You are missed. Ed Morrissey

I didn't get to form the same bond with Mr. Meckley as some of the previous PLET students were able to, but he was my advisor for the last semester he was here. He was an absolute joy to work with, and he encouraged me to reach as far as I could go. He always cracked jokes and made sure to check up on me.
It is unfortunate to hear of what has happened, but I will cherish my good memories with him. He will be remembered and continue to be loved by so many people, and I'm so glad he was able to make such an impact with so many others.
My best wishes go out to his family. I hope that all of the good memories he made with all of you bring you comfort in these darker times. Blessings.

As a new faculty member at Behrend in 2017, Jon was my introduction to outreach in Engineering. One of my colleagues had set up a joint department activity with two of the local elementary schools. The elementary students were predictably unpredictable. The college students did their very best to do the activity we had assigned.
Jon laughed and seemed to enjoy the whole process. He taught me one of the most valuable lessons of my career; trust the process. While we couldn't predict what would happen in between, we knew the structure that we had set up and the benchmarks that our students would meet. We also knew that if we did our jobs correctly, delicious chaos would ensue, then subside. At the conclusion, we would see the magical creation of both groups of students coming together.
Thank you, Jon. You are missed.

If there is anything I know about Meckley, it is the complete dedication he had to his students and to the PL ET department at Penn State Behrend. He was so passionate about the degree program that he almost convinced me to change majors in my SENIOR year of college.
I remember sitting in a meeting room with him on campus. He looked at me and said, "You could do it."
I looked back at him confused because it had been silent before he spoke, so I had no idea what he was talking about. "Do what?"
"Be a PL ET major. You could get it done in one year probably, with your gen eds out of the way." And I could tell in his eyes that he believed that I truly could do it, even if he was smiling at me as if he were telling a joke.
Meckley always pushed his students to their limits because he knew that they could be better. He was one of the most light-hearted, caring, funny, and intelligent professors I met when I was a student. When he retired, it was a great loss for Behrend. Now, we all face an even greater loss. What I can say with full confidence is that he will be infinitely missed by me and all of the students he had in class.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you, esp Kim, Shelva and Berry. I knew Jon since he was a little boy, as a friend with my son, Fred (Rickie). They went to school together and were the best of friends. As time went on, we drew apart, but got back together on Facebook. I followed all of his adventures, esp. with Kim. and also with The Cat. Just the day before I messengered him a happy birthday and he answered back with a thank you. I can't believe he is gone! I know he is in a better place and they even have a ski slope up there for him. Love to all of you. My prayers go up.
