Obituary of M. James Thunberg
Marvin James Thunberg (Jim), 86, formerly of Jamestown, NY, passed away on June 16, 2023 at Glenmere Assisted Living in Pittsford, NY.
Jim was born on April 7, 1937 in DuBois, PA, son of the late Marvin and Helene Whitford Thunberg. He is preceded in death in 2021 by his beloved wife of 65 years, Sandra A. Thunberg, and In-laws Marvin and Harriet Anderson.
Jim is survived by his family that he dearly loved, Daughters, Shelley (Lee) Jacobs and Melanie (Patrick) Byrne. He was PopPop to his Grandchildren, Dr. Jason (Callie) Jacobs, Brent (Alexandra) Jacobs, Elizabeth Byrne, Patrick Byrne II (Gina Schultz), Abigail Quinn Byrne and his Great Grandchildren, Thompson, Carter and Margot Jacobs.
Jim graduated from Jamestown High School, where he started dating Sandy in 9th grade. He attended the American Institute of Banking and taught classes at Jamestown Community College. He began his career at Marine Midland Bank (now HSBC-USA) as a Teller and worked his way up to Vice President, retiring in 1993. Jim took great pride in assisting people purchasing homes, opening businesses, etc. He then became CFO of Lutheran Social Services, followed by Executive Director of the LSS Foundation. He was on the Board of Directors at Jamestown Girls Club, Lutheran Social Services, Bournes Beach Association (Treasurer), and Sea Mark Tower (Treasurer).
Jim lived in Jamestown most of his life and always considered Jamestown his home. He and Sandy had a cottage at Bournes Beach, Westfield, NY where many family memories were made. They also had a home in Myrtle Beach, SC. In recent years they moved to Canandaigua, NY to be closer to their family.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 19, 2023 in the Lind Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's name may be made to Friendly Home Senior Living, Attention: Cloverwood/Glenmere Staff Appreciation, 3156 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14618.
