Obituary of Phyllis C. Gustavson

Phyllis Cass Gustavson, born March 25, 1928, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2023 at the age of 95. Residing for most of her life in the Jamestown-Frewsburg area, she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Harry R. Gustavson, and parents Rollin F. Cass and Esther Sandberg Cass, as well as her former husband, Lester C. Nelson. A graduate of Jamestown High School and Elmira College, class of 1950, she remained active in the Elmira Club. Phyllis was employed at Jamestown High School as an English/Spanish teacher where she made a huge impact on her students until she retired in 1985. Many of them continued to remain in contact with her over the years, a special delight she treasured. When an opportunity presented itself, Phyllis began volunteering weekly at the WCA Hospital for numerous years accumulating over 2500 service hours. Throughout her life, family and friends were a main focus giving her an opportunity to send all types of greeting cards. She also participated in many social clubs, enjoyed playing bridge and lunches/dinners out with friends trying new places. Phyllis and Harry entertained regularly in their home as well as attended Christ First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughters Callie Saff (FL) and Christine Nelson Bingham (AZ); five stepsons: Todd, Randy, Wayne, Thom and David Gustavson; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Christ First United Methodist Church.
