Obituary of Doretta D. Sheffield

Doretta D Sheffield, 98, formerly of 8 Crane St., went home to be with our Lord on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023 at Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing in Jamestown. She was born on Sept. 24, 1924, the only daughter of the late Simon and Alice Dahlin of Jamestown. She married C. Ray Sheffield in 1943 and they were married for 54 years, living many of those years in East Randolph. While living there she worked for many families as a housekeeper, at Inkley Pharmacy, Tony's Tastee Freeze, Sheffield Drycleaning, and in later years for Bly, Sheffield and Andrews Law Offices in Jamestown. She was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Randolph for many years and active in choir and numerous committees before moving back to Jamestown in 1981 and rejoining her childhood church, First Covenant Church, where she was a greeter and on various committees. Doretta was proud of her "Stubborn" Swedish heritage, but mostly, she was fiercely proud of her family, always claiming she had the "best". She was the best "hugger" and taught all of her kids and grandkids those hugs. Doretta was a loving person who always put her family first and she will be sadly missed by all of us who knew her and loved her. Surviving are her children, Lanny (Marie) Sheffield of Henderson, NV; Candace Vesneski of DeBary, FL; Martin (Dianne) Sheffield of Bath, PA; and Marsha (Steve) Cowen of East Randolph. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Tiffany (Derek) Shaw, Crystal (Robert) Spitale, Sheila (Brett) Roth, Susie (Matt) Stephens, Toni (Chuck) Sweat, Katie Weaver, Scott Sheffield, Holly Sheffield, Bradley (Serenity) Sheffield, Kerry (Vincent) Quimi, Wendy (Mark) Phillips, Michael (Brandi) Fleischmann and Brian (Rochelle) Fleischmann. She is also survived by 3 step-grandchildren: Amos (Jayme) Cowen, Stephanie (Mark) Stevens and Mitchell Cowen. Doretta is survived by 33 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Joyce Sheffield and Sally Dahlin, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; a son-in-law, Timothy Vesneski; and 3 brothers, Clayton, Marshall and Warren Dahlin. The family would also like to thank Morgan Yarber of Heritage Park for her love and care of our Mom. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023 at First Covenant Church in Jamestown. The family will greet friends following the service in the church Saturday. Inurnment will be in the Allen Cemetery on Willard St Ext. Memorials can be made to First Covenant Church or to a charity of choice.
