Obituary of Barbara B. Slumsky

Barbara Ann Boerst Slumsky, of 1505 Third Street, passed away peacefully on May 25th, 2024. A Jamestown resident all her life, she was born March 27, 1947, in Jamestown, NY, the daughter of William W. Boerst and Rosemary Herkert Boerst. She was a 1965 graduate of Jamestown High School, going on to complete her BA in English from Hartwick College, class of 1969. She taught within the Southwestern School district for many years, spending the most time as a 7th and 8th grade English teacher. She married the love of her life Edward M. Slumsky August 31, 1975, and the marriage lasted 50 joyful years until her passing. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Rosemary Boerst and her brother, William J. Boerst. She is survived by her husband (Edward) and two siblings, Betty Lou (Boerst) Blixt of Jamestown, NY and Robert W. Boerst (Jill Lunn) of the Villages, FL. She is also survived by her two children Trayce E. Slumsky of Mount Laurel, NJ, and Katie E, Slumsky of Jamestown, NY and her Daughter in law Niketa Chotalal of Mount Laurel, NJ. Edward and Barbara had one grandson, Trayce E. Slumsky II. and three granddaughters Macey A. Fluent, Mia R. Fluent, and Makenna S. Fluent. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Barbara was a very active member of the Jamestown community. She was a member of the St. Luke's Episcopal Church, The Zonta Club of Jamestown, The Chautauqua County Orchestra, and was a tenacious Bunco player. She believed in giving back when she saw the opportunity working at the Love Express food pantry and volunteering at her church. Working with the Knitters Guild, she made hats for soldiers in Iraq, premature babies in the NICU, and shawls which were donated to local nursing homes. She cherished every friendship she made and was happiest spending time with the people she loved. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, June 1st in St. Luke's Episcopal Church found at 410 North Main St., Jamestown, NY 14701.
